SING OUT! MAGAZINE BENEFIT TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 17TH IN HURLEY, NEW YORK

Lamanna : Pete is on the advisory board, along with Joe Hickerson, the former director of The Folk Music Archive at The Library of Congress, but I don’t know whether Pethe’s actually been to any of our concerts. Examiner : Why did you choose Sing Out! as the beneficiary of this years event? Lamanna : We chose to honor and raise money for Sing Out ! because we’re aware that they’re having financial difficulty, and the magazine has contributed so much to people’s knowledge of folk music over the years. We thought it would be fun to sing as many songs that have appeared in their pages as we could.

Art music and folk songs

“Mexico is very rich in folk and culture, and yet there was a significant development in art music that most people don’t know. People know the popular and folk genre but they don’t know much of the art genre of Mexican music. There were certainly first-class Mexican composers up to the level of the best of the 19th and 20th century that are not known.” On Saturday, Flores, soprano Laura Ortiz and a full mariachi band that includes seven violins, three trumpets, two guitars, a bass and four additional vocalists – all of whom are Andrews University music students – will perform both sides of Mexico’s musical traditions during “A Night of Music, Art & Folklore in Mexico” at the Howard Performing Arts Center.
